Week 10: What AI can bring to teaching – ChatGPT

Image
Hello again, welcome to my blog! Today we are going to talk about one of the most popular arguments of this moment – the artificial intelligence (AI).   Now that the development of AI is inevitable, we as language teachers need to embrace and change with it. How can AI help our teaching and how can we influence our students to have the correct understanding of AI? I will use ChatGPT as an example to discuss what AI can bring to our teaching. Surely this isn't the first time we've discussed how AI has changed language education. In week 6 I introduced you to Yoodli , a website that uses AI to help users practice speaking. It can listen all the time, as well as give instant feedback, making it a great convenience for many users with speaking practice needs. Today we will no longer limit our range to speaking, but to the impact that AI has brought to English language learning and teaching in general: ChatGPT .   l   What is ChatGPT? It likes an online chat box,...

Week 9: Blended learning - TED-ed

Image
Welcome back! This week we are going to talk about blended learning! Also introducing a very useful teaching website: TED-ed. l   What is 'blended learning'? According to Mizza & Rubio (2020), blended learning is an educational approach that combines traditional classroom and online learning resource. By doing so, it can bring together the strengths of the traditional classroom and the rich online teaching resources to form a more efficient way of learning. Especially for language teaching, which requires the constant updates of target language resources. As technology develops, this type of teaching is becoming more and more popular.   l   TED-ed I think most of you have heard of TED talk, maybe some of you use it as self-learning tool. But today, let me demonstrate a branch of TED talk. The TED ed, a website especially builds for worldwide educators. Unlike TED talk, which has a higher language requirement for listeners TED-ed is designed speci...

Week 8: Quizzes have never been so much fun – Kahoot!

Image
Hello! It's been a while since my last update, great to see you!  Today I am going to introduce a learning platform you might be heard about – Kahoot!   We all know how much work it takes to make students interact with us. Sometimes it just doesn't work so well.  Quizzes is a very common method for teachers to check students' understanding and performance, but the traditional paper pen quizzes is a little out of date. It's time to use the Internet!   What is Kahoot and how to use it?   First of all, Kahoot is an online learning platform that could help bring more interactions in the classroom. It has many templates that teachers can use to design their quizzes, surveys or discussions.   I have used Kahoot many times and I really like to put a little Kahoot game at the end of the class, ang students like it too. To create a Kahoot quiz, you need to have an account and your pre-designed questions and answers. When you finish putting the que...

Week 7: A new way of teaching – Nearpod

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back! How are you this week?   In this week I want to show you a mobile learning tool – Nearpod. Nearpod Nearpod is an education platform that helps teachers making online presentation, preparing lesson plan and doing in-class activities with students. For teachers, Nearpod is very suitable for live webinars and online learning. Your students can be anywhere and follow the class in no time! I know it sounds quite common in these days, but the unique thing about Nearpod is that it can 'control your students'. I will elaborate this point.   'Controlling your students’ One special thing about Nearpod is real-time sharing, which means that when your students join the online classroom you designed, their screens cannot be operated except to see what you want to show them. This greatly helps students to follow the class and focus at all times. When you move, they move. Thus, teachers can focus on delivering the class and balance the input level ...

Week 5: Type, Post and Share -- Padlet

Image
New technology that makes your students love classroom. When I was a student and sit in an English classroom, the last thing I wanted was the teacher talking the whole session and no interaction with students. As an English teacher now, I always try to make my classroom more engaging and encourage everyone to speak the target language. So this week, I found a new technology could help language teachers to create an interactive learning environment. Introducing the Padlet . I nteractive, creative and fun. Padlet is an educational tool which can present, share and interact with students. It has many features but the one I like the most is a real-time collaborative platform. Sounds a bit like google doc right? Well, they do have some similar features, but Padlet works so much better in the classroom. You will need an account to use Padlet, so the first step is to set up your account. If you have a google account, this step will be so much easier, you just need to log in. Then ...
