Week 6: The most patient speaking coach – Yoodli
Helloooo everyone, it's been a while since my last update, great to see you again! This week I have a new learning technology that I want to introduce to you.
Do you struggle
with how to improve your English fluency? Or do your students feel frustrated
when practice speaking and you don't know how to help?
Well, with the recent
debate around AI (artificial intelligence), people are starting to wonder what
AI can do for us, how they help us improve. If you are on the supporting side, today's
content is for you.
This is a new language
learning application that help people to imporve their speech. How it works? In
short, it uses AI to analyse people's speech habits, speed and word choice and
to give suggestions for improvement. Some of the details you may never ever
realise, and those suggestions are really helpful.
So before we get to the business, you will need a zoom account and a google account. Sign in and open your zoom meeting. The app will ask you what are the scenarios and purposes of your practice, it will give you three options, which are interview, presentation, or just casual talk! Choose what's best for you!
Then the website is going to ask you to type your zoom meeting link and the bot is invited to your meeting. After you finished, the speaking will be uploaded to yoodli website. Wait a few minutes for AI to analyse your speech, then you can see the result and suggestion!
I tried the casual talk function and I spoke for about five minutes. Check out my results!
Obviously, the AI is gonna show you the full transcript and highligt the most significant aspect. For me, is how frequent I used the 'um' during my speech, and I didn't notice there are so many times I said 'um'. And my speech speed is slow.
You may be thinking that these are aspects of everyday conversation that don't get noticed, so how do I get help from that? It is true that most aspects will not affect us too much in daily life, but for people who need to practice job interview, or presentation, this app becomes so useful to make user identify the details. And it gives suggentions, too! You can listen, repeat, record over and over again until you are fluent, the AI won't judge you and it does its job.
Before you start, there are few things you should know…
1.
There are
no interaction.
Unfortunately, for
now yoodli only acts like a slient listener. It can not give interaction like in
the real life, so I won’t suggest you to use it if you want practice daily
conversation. I think it is much more difficult to achieve fluency for everyday
use, and yoodli might not able to help much.
2.
Inaccurate
identification
It happens
sometimes, for AI. Misheared and inaccurate words identification can happen, so
you might need to check the transcript yourself.
For now, yoodli
does not provide other language options. It is a very new application and now only
has beta version. But I think it will have mulitiple language choices in the
future once the developers finish the whole app.
That's it for this
week, see you next one!

I often feel very friendly when reading your blog. Improving students' spoken English is difficult, Yoodli is really an interesting and effective website, and I will recommend it to my students in future teaching. Through the description and operation guidance of Yoodli in your blog, I have successfully used Yoodli for a speaking practice, which is really fun! The video you provided also explains the Yoodli very well. Just, can you enlarge the image you quoted? I cannot see the content of the picture clearly. But it could also be because my computer screen is not big enough ...
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I am also working on improving my students' English fluency. It's amazing Yoodli should analyze people's speaking habits, speed and word choices and suggest improvements. I believe it can help me a lot.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I like your analogy "It's the most patient speech coach", which was very apt.
